Force Measuring Unit, Skylab, 1973. Creators: Martin Marietta, NASA

This device was part of the Crew/Vehicle Disturbance experiment flown aboard the Skylab space station launched by the United States in 1973. The purpose of the experiment was to determine the effect of crew activities on the vehicles stability by measuring the forces, torques, and vehicle motions caused by the astronauts movements. As an astronaut stood on the unit or moved between units, precise measurements of his motions and resultant forces on the vehicle structure were sent the ground for comparison with vehicle attitude and pointing control data to analyze disturbances. This extra device was stowed aboard the backup Skylab orbital workshop that NASA transferred to the Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Force Measuring Unit, a remarkable piece of technology developed by Martin Marietta and NASA. Created as part of the Crew/Vehicle Disturbance experiment flown aboard the Skylab space station in 1973, this device played a crucial role in understanding the impact of crew activities on vehicle stability. The purpose of this experiment was to measure forces, torques, and vehicle motions caused by astronauts' movements. As an astronaut stood on or moved between units, precise measurements were taken to analyze disturbances on the vehicle structure. These measurements were then sent back to Earth for comparison with vehicle attitude and pointing control data. The Force Measuring Unit represented a significant advancement in our understanding of human activity's effect on spacecraft stability. Its presence aboard the backup Skylab orbital workshop transferred to the Museum is a testament to its historical significance. This photograph captures not only a technological marvel but also represents America's commitment to space exploration during the 1970s. It serves as a reminder of our nation's pioneering spirit and dedication to pushing boundaries in science and technology. Displayed at the National Air and Space Museum, this artifact stands as an educational institution that preserves our country's rich aerospace heritage. The image evokes curiosity about past achievements while inspiring future generations towards further advancements in space travel technology.
