Flowers in a Glass, 1606. Creator: Ambrosius Bosschaert (Dutch, 1573-1621)

Flowers in a Glass, 1606. One of the first artists to specialize in flower painting, Bosschaert depicted flowers with a fine technique that seems almost devoid of individual brushstrokes. His precision is also a result of the paintings copper support. When applied to the white ground typically used to coat a copper plate, oil paint takes on an enamel-like quality. Placed in a simple studded glass, the principal flowers of this bouquet are tulips, each carefully silhouetted so that their individual features could be portrayed. The anchor of this carefully arranged composition is the spider lily (hymenocallis) in the lower center, accompanied by two yellow crocuses. Butterflies, other insects, and snails enliven this still life. Bosschaert worked in the town of Middelburg, where he had access to several botanical gardens and scientific collections of natural specimens. He was also an art dealer, who traded with Antwerp, Frankfurt, London, and Ireland

Flowers in a Glass, 1606

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a stunning print by Ambrosius Bosschaert, one of the pioneers in flower painting. With his meticulous technique and attention to detail, Bosschaert created a masterpiece that appears almost flawless, as if devoid of individual brushstrokes. The use of oil paint on a copper support further enhances the enamel-like quality of the artwork. In this composition, Bosschaert skillfully portrays a bouquet of tulips as the focal point. Each tulip is carefully outlined to capture its unique features. Adding depth and interest to the still life are other flowers such as spider lilies and yellow crocuses, accompanied by delicate butterflies, insects, and snails. Bosschaert's location in Middelburg proved advantageous for his artistic endeavors. Access to botanical gardens and scientific collections allowed him to study and accurately depict various plant species with precision. Not only was he an accomplished artist but also an art dealer who engaged in trade with prominent cities like Antwerp, Frankfurt, London, and Ireland. This aspect of his career highlights his influence beyond creating beautiful paintings; he played a significant role in promoting art across different regions. The "Flowers in a Glass" print captures not only the beauty of nature but also showcases Bosschaert's technical mastery and dedication to capturing every intricate detail within his compositions.
