Fleet Model 2, 1929. Creator: Unknown
Two-seat, dual controls open-cockpit biplane with steel tube frame, spruce wing spars, aluminum ribs, all fabric covered; with Kinner K5 100 hp engine. The Fleet Model 2 was a primary flight trainer at the Roosevelt Aviation School, Long Island, New York, one of the leading civilian aviation schools in the U.S. in the 1930s. It was one of ten Fleet aircraft owned by Roosevelt Field, out of about 350 Fleet aircraft built between 1929 and 1942. Hundreds of student pilots received instruction in this Fleet at Roosevelt Field or later in Pennsylvania in the Civilian Pilot Training Program, which provided pilots for military service during World War II. Designed by Major Reuben Fleet as a smaller version of the military PT-3 trainer, the compact and relatively inexpensive Fleet was the first aircraft specifically designed for the civilian flight training market. In September 1979, Eugene Breiner, an Fa Principal Airworthiness Inspector, purchased NC8689 and restored it to its 1939 Roosevelt Field trainer configuration. In 1985, Breiners Plane Jane, so named because it was a just a plain simple airplane, returned to flying status

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Fleet Model 2, a remarkable aircraft from 1929 whose creator remains unknown. With its two-seat, dual controls open-cockpit design and sturdy steel tube frame, this biplane was an integral part of the Roosevelt Aviation School in Long Island, New York during the 1930s. As one of only ten Fleet aircraft owned by Roosevelt Field out of approximately 350 ever built between 1929 and 1942, it holds a special place in aviation history. The Fleet Model 2 played a crucial role as a primary flight trainer for hundreds of student pilots at Roosevelt Field and later in Pennsylvania through the Civilian Pilot Training Program during World War II. This program provided skilled pilots for military service when they were most needed. Designed by Major Reuben Fleet as a smaller version of the military PT-3 trainer, this compact yet affordable aircraft became the first-ever specifically tailored for civilian flight training purposes. Its construction featured spruce wing spars with aluminum ribs covered entirely in fabric. In September 1979, Eugene Breiner - an Fa Principal Airworthiness Inspector - acquired NC8689 and dedicated himself to restoring it to its original configuration as a Roosevelt Field trainer from 1939. By naming it "Plane Jane" he emphasized its simplicity while celebrating its rich heritage. Thanks to Breiner's dedication and expertise, Plane Jane took to the skies once again in 1985 after undergoing extensive restoration work. This stunning photograph immortalizes not just an extraordinary aircraft but also pays homage to those who trained on it during their journey towards becoming skilled aviators.
