The final stages of cooker assembly at the GEC plant, Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1960
The final stages of cooker assembly at the GEC plant, Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1960. The GEC, which was formed in 1900, first acquired a factory in Swinton, near Rotherham, during the Second World War, when it produced munitions. After the war, cooker production was based in Birmingham but the company struggled to find good workers, possibly due to the motor industry (which shared the same skills) offering more money. The directors decided to manufacture cookers at Swinton and the first cooker came off the production line in June 1946

The Final Stages of Cooker Assembly at the GEC Plant, Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1960
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the manufacturing process at the GEC plant in Swinton, South Yorkshire. In this image taken by Michael Walters, we witness the skilled workers meticulously assembling cookers on an assembly line. The General Electric Company (GEC), established in 1900, initially acquired the factory during World War II for munitions production. However, after struggling to find qualified workers in Birmingham post-war due to higher-paying opportunities in the motor industry, GEC made a strategic decision to relocate cooker production to Swinton. In June 1946, history was made as the first cooker rolled off the production line at this very plant. This photo offers us a glimpse into that era of industrial prowess and female empowerment as we see women taking up roles traditionally held by men. The atmosphere inside this bustling factory is one of dedication and precision. The workers diligently carry out their tasks with utmost concentration while surrounded by machinery and equipment necessary for producing these essential household appliances. This image serves as a testament to Britain's rich industrial heritage and showcases how companies like GEC played a significant role in shaping our country's domestic landscape. It reminds us of an era when manufacturing thrived and communities relied on factories like these for employment opportunities. As we admire this snapshot from history captured by Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , it invites us to appreciate both the craftsmanship behind these cookers and the hardworking individuals who contributed to their creation.
