EDITORS COMMENTS
Farnese Palace, Rome, 1850: A Glimpse into the Past The Farnese Palace, a grand architectural masterpiece situated in the heart of Rome, is depicted in this photograph from the 19th century. The palace, which bears the name of its former resident, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, stands proudly in the Piazza Farnese. The apartments within the palace, open to the public, are a testament to the opulence of the Renaissance era. With their spacious and lofty interiors, they are adorned with intricate frescoes, rich cornices, and sculpted marbles. Although some relics of ancient art once graced these halls, the majority of the Farnese collection's gems, including precious gems and antiquities, were transferred to the Royal Museum in Naples by the King of Naples. The palace, currently serving as the residence of the Neapolitan ambassador, was founded by Pope Paul III in the 16th century. Cardinal Farnese, who was known for his ambitious acquisitions, sourced materials for the palace from the Colosseum and other ancient structures in Rome that still held marble slabs, columns, or statues. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the history and grandeur of the Farnese Palace during the Victorian era. The image captures the exterior beauty of the palace, with its intricate details and classical architectural elements, inviting us to explore the rich history and culture of Rome during the Renaissance and beyond.
