Highway City, California, near Fresno. Family from Oklahoma; have been in California for six years, have been migratory workers now on Works Progress Administration (WPA) from which they may be cut off at the opening of the 1939 harvest. Their house represents one of many similar structures, which they are attempting to construct by their own efforts on poor land, for which they are paying a few dollars a month out of the WPA budget. Their light bill is two dollars a month. Water bill one dollar a month, kerosene for cooking five dollars per month, approximately. They own a 1929 Ford. " The cheapest thing for the government to do would be to put people like me on enough land to make a living on. You can t tell me anything about running around with the fruit, I know that deal. You are lucky if you make enough to get home. I m not a kickin, I m being tuk care of, but if I should live to be hundred this way I m not getting ahead noways."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captured by Dorothea Lange in 1939 showcases the struggles and resilience of a family from Oklahoma who had migrated to California six years prior. Set against the backdrop of Highway City, near Fresno, this image tells a story of hardship and determination. The family, now dependent on Works Progress Administration (WPA) for employment, faces an uncertain future as they fear being cut off from their source of income at the opening of the upcoming harvest season. Their modest house symbolizes countless similar structures that families like theirs are trying to construct with meager resources on unfertile land. They pay a few dollars each month out of their WPA budget to secure this place they call home. Living frugally is their way of life; their monthly expenses include a two-dollar light bill, one dollar for water usage, and approximately five dollars spent on kerosene for cooking purposes. Despite owning a 1929 Ford car, which serves as transportation during challenging times, they yearn for stability and security. In expressing his frustrations about migrant work in the agricultural industry, one family member suggests that it would be more beneficial if the government provided enough land for families like theirs to make a living independently. The struggle to earn enough money while constantly moving around chasing seasonal fruit picking jobs has left them feeling trapped in an endless cycle without any progress or hope for improvement. Through Lange's lens, we witness not only the harsh realities faced by this particular family but also gain insight into the larger socio-economic challenges experienced by many during this era.
