F. Debenham, 9 September 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
F. Debenham, 9 September 1911, (1913). Geologist Frank Debenham (1883-1965) with a plane table, used in surveying to provide a solid and level surface on which to make field drawings, charts and maps. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures geologist Frank Debenham during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken on 9 September 1911 by renowned artist Herbert Ponting, the image showcases Debenham utilizing a plane table, an essential tool used in surveying to create accurate field drawings, charts, and maps. The Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), also known as the British Antarctic Expedition, was comprised of a diverse team including scientists such as geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Led by Scott himself and driven by scientific curiosity and ambition to be the first to reach the South Pole. Accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Scott's team finally reached their long-awaited destination on 17 January 1912. However, their joy quickly turned into disappointment upon discovering that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were discovered eight months later alongside their poignant diaries which revealed their heroic struggle against nature's harsh forces. This remarkable photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , providing us with a glimpse into one of history's most daring explorations while honoring those who sacrificed everything for scientific discovery.
