An Egyptian shaduf lifting the Nile waters to the thirsty fields, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood

An Egyptian shaduf lifting the Nile waters to the thirsty fields, Egypt, 1905. For many thousands of years this device has been used. A pole, with a weight or counterpoise at one end and a bucket hanging from the other, is suspended at a point not far from the weight, which then, by its simple gravity, draws up the bucket when filled from the waters below. With this primitive equipment, the native raises the water from four to eight feet, though a strong man will lift it much higher. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "An Egyptian shaduf lifting the Nile waters to the thirsty fields, Egypt, 1905" captures a timeless scene of ancient irrigation techniques in action. The image showcases an essential device used for thousands of years by the native Egyptians - a shaduf. This primitive yet effective tool consists of a pole with a weight or counterpoise at one end and a bucket hanging from the other. The photograph beautifully depicts how this simple gravity-powered mechanism draws up water from the Nile River below to quench the thirst of arid fields. With remarkable teamwork and strength, men raise the water from four to eight feet using these shadufs, although some powerful individuals can lift it even higher. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and timelessness to this snapshot of history. It transports us back to early 20th-century Egypt when agriculture heavily relied on such ingenious methods for survival. The cliff face in the background serves as a reminder of both nature's grandeur and its challenges that these hardworking farmers faced daily. This stereoscopic card is part of an extensive series called "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" by Underwood & Underwood, accompanied by insightful text written by James H Breasted. It offers viewers a unique glimpse into ancient Egyptian life while highlighting their resourcefulness and resilience in harnessing water for agricultural purposes. Overall, this print encapsulates not only geographical features but also cultural heritage as it immortalizes an age-old tradition still practiced today in certain parts of Egypt.
