EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of Edward Winslow, an influential figure in American history during the 17th century. Born in England in 1595, Winslow was a Puritan who played a vital role as one of the Pilgrim Fathers aboard the Mayflower. In 1620, they arrived at New Plymouth in Massachusetts to establish a new colony. Winslow's significance lies not only in his leadership but also in his ability to forge friendly relations with the local Native American tribe, particularly Massasoit, chief of the Pokanoket tribe. Through these alliances, he ensured that the colonists avoided starvation during their challenging early years. Governorship was another responsibility that fell upon Winslow's shoulders; he served as governor of New Plymouth Colony on three separate occasions - 1633,1636, and 1644. His commitment to religious principles and dedication to establishing a prosperous settlement made him an essential figure within this period of colonialism. This portrait engraving from Cassells History of the United States provides us with a glimpse into Winslow's appearance and attire during this time. The formal clothing and distinctive collar reflect both his English background and position as a leader within this new land. Edward Winslow's legacy remains intertwined with America's early history as one of its pioneering settlers. This print serves as a reminder of his contributions to religious freedom, diplomacy with Native Americans, and establishment of successful colonies amidst challenging circumstances.
