Edward II and the minstrel

King Edward II (1284-1327) and the minstrel. Edward was King of England from 1307 until he was deposed in 1327. His tendency to ignore his nobility in favour of low-born favourites led to constant political unrest and his eventual deposition. He was the first monarch to establish colleges in the universities of Oxford and Cambridge; he founded Cambridges Kings Hall in 1317 and gave Oxfords Oriel College its royal charter in 1326. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing King Edward II of England alongside a minstrel. The image portrays the complex nature of Edward's reign, marked by political unrest due to his controversial favoritism towards low-born companions over the nobility. Despite the challenges he faced as a ruler, King Edward II made notable contributions to academia. He became the first monarch to establish colleges in both Oxford and Cambridge universities. In 1317, he founded Cambridge's Kings Hall and granted Oxfords Oriel College its royal charter in 1326. The composition of this print highlights an intimate scene within a banqueting hall where music fills the air. With his head respectfully bowed, the minstrel delivers a mesmerizing performance for King Edward II. This portrayal emphasizes not only the king's appreciation for arts but also his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Edward II is depicted as a regal figure seated on horseback, symbolizing his sovereignty and authority. His presence exudes power while simultaneously revealing vulnerability through his contemplative expression. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Cassell & Co. 's Illustrated History of England collection, we are transported back to fourteenth-century England—a time when monarchy was intertwined with artistry and cultural patronage. This photograph serves as a testament to King Edward II's legacy as both an influential ruler and supporter of intellectual pursuits during one of England's most transformative periods.
