EDITORS COMMENTS
The Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia," painted by Bernardo Cavallino in 1645, is a masterpiece of Baroque art currently housed in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, Italy. This exquisite oil on canvas painting depicts the ancient Roman saint Cecilia, the patroness of music, in a moment of profound ecstasy as she listens to the celestial music of angels. Cecilia, a noblewoman, was martyred in Rome during the third century for refusing to renounce her Christian faith. According to legend, three angels appeared to her during her martyrdom, serenading her with heavenly music to ease her suffering. This scene is vividly portrayed in Cavallino's painting, with the saint in a state of rapturous delight, her eyes closed and her body tilted back in ecstasy. The painting is rich in symbolism, with musical instruments scattered around the room, including a lyre, a viola da gamba, and a harpsichord. These instruments represent the harmony and beauty of the celestial music that Cecilia hears. The painting also features a veiled figure in the background, believed to be Saint Valeria, another patron saint of music, who is said to have been present during Cecilia's martyrdom. Cavallino's masterful use of light and shadow, as well as his skillful depiction of the human form, make this painting a true masterpiece of the Baroque period. The Ecstasy of Saint Cecilia is not only a work of art but also a testament to the enduring power of faith and the transcendent beauty of music.
