The Earl of Leicester, 16th century, (1896). Portrait of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, favourite of Queen Elizabeth I of England, (1823). A courtier of Elizabeth I, Dudley (1532-1588) was regarded as her most likely choice for a husband. However his wifes mysterious death in 1560 placed a dark spot on his reputation. In 1561 he suggested to Philip II to restore Roman Catholicism in England in return for Philips endorsement of his to Elizabeth. Yet by 1563 Elizabeth realised the impracticality of such a marriage. She offered his hand to Mary Queen of Scots and created him Earl of Leicester in 1564, however Mary married Lord Darnley. This print showcases the enigmatic figure of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, during the 16th century. As a favorite courtier of Queen Elizabeth I, Dudley was considered a potential suitor for her hand in marriage. However, tragedy struck when his wife died under mysterious circumstances in 1560, casting a shadow over his reputation. In an attempt to regain favor with Elizabeth and secure his position at court, Dudley proposed restoring Roman Catholicism in England to Philip II of Spain. Although initially intrigued by this idea, Elizabeth eventually realized the impracticality of such a union. She then offered Dudley's hand to Mary Queen of Scots but faced another disappointment as she married Lord Darnley instead. The portrait captures Dudley's aristocratic demeanor with his elaborate clothing adorned with fur and lace details. His beard is neatly groomed while he wears a distinguished hat and chain of office around his neck.
