Drawing of Hubble Telescope, 1980s
Drawing of Hubble Telescope, 1980s. Artists impression of the exchange of information via Hubble, Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TRDS) and ground stations. Hubble Space Telescope (HST), was designed to see seven times further into space than had been possible before, without the distortion caused by the earths atmosphere. HST is a reflecting telescope and its main mirror has a diameter of 2 1/2 meters. Work began in 1977 and HST was finally launched by Space Shuttle Discovery on 24 April 1990. Problems with its giant mirror meant that it did not initially work as well as expected. Corrective optics were installed in 1993, greatly improving the telescopes performance, enabling it to view the Universe in unprecedented detail

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed drawing of the Hubble Telescope from the 1980s, providing an artist's impression of how information is exchanged between the telescope, Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TRDS), and ground stations. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was ingeniously designed to overcome the distortion caused by Earth's atmosphere, enabling it to peer seven times further into space than ever before. With its impressive reflecting telescope and a main mirror boasting a diameter of 2 1/2 meters, this technological marvel began its journey in 1977 and was finally launched into orbit by Space Shuttle Discovery on April 24th, 1990. However, initial setbacks arose due to problems with its giant mirror. Nevertheless, scientists swiftly installed corrective optics in 1993 which significantly enhanced the telescope's performance. This breakthrough allowed HST to observe our universe with unprecedented clarity and detail that had previously been unimaginable. The image also highlights various elements associated with this remarkable feat of human ingenuity: solar panels for power generation, NASA's involvement as well as other scientific concepts like exploration, innovation, technology advancements in communications systems during that era. It serves as a vibrant reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our planet throughout the twentieth century. This stunning print from Heritage Images not only captures an iconic moment in space exploration but also celebrates the achievements made possible through collaboration between different entities involved in pushing boundaries within astronomy and science itself.
