EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Drawing Class at the Real School in Tyumen'", was captured by Russian photographer N Terekhov in 1889. The image offers a glimpse into the Aleksandrovsky School in Tyumen', Siberia, which operated from 1879 until 1919. Founded on the initiative of Governor-General of Siberia, Nikolai Gennadievich Kaznakov, the school educated young men from the first to the sixth grades. Through a unique project organized by American journalist and explorer George Kennan, the school received equipment from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The students were taught various subjects including Russian, German, and French, mathematics, history, drawing, and religion. In this photograph, we see a dedicated drawing class in session. The students, dressed in their uniforms, are intently focused on their drawings, their expressions reflecting the seriousness of their task. The interior of the classroom is well-lit, with large windows allowing natural light to filter in. The blackboard at the front of the room displays a drawing, possibly a reference for the students. The Aleksandrovsky School was a significant educational institution in Siberia during the 19th century. Its legacy continues to be celebrated, as evidenced by this historic photograph, which is now part of the collections at the Library of Congress. The meeting of frontiers between Eastern and Western influences is beautifully captured in this image, showcasing the dedication of the students and the progressive educational methods of the time.
