Dr. Simpson in his Laboratory, 21 December 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Dr. Simpson in his Laboratory, 21 December 1911, (1913). Meteorologist George Simpson (1878-1965) took detailed measurements in order to predict the best possible conditions for Scotts journey to the Pole. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Dr. Simpson in his Laboratory, 21 December 1911" captures the dedicated meteorologist George Simpson meticulously measuring and analyzing data to predict optimal conditions for Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated journey to the South Pole. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting as part of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), this image offers a glimpse into the scientific preparations undertaken before embarking on one of history's most significant polar expeditions. Led by Scott, this British Antarctic Expedition aimed not only to reach the geographic South Pole but also to continue important scientific research initiated during Scott's previous Discovery Expedition (1901-04). The team comprised experts from various fields including geology, zoology, surgery, engineering, skiing expertise, and physics. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring treacherous conditions and battling blizzards along with Dr. Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans finally reached their long-awaited destination - only to discover that Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition had triumphed over them a month earlier. Tragically delayed by relentless blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining companions perished at the end of March. Their bodies were discovered eight months later alongside poignant diaries detailing their heroic struggle against nature's merciless forces. This profound photograph serves as a testament to both human ambition and sacrifice in pursuit of knowledge and exploration in Earth's harshest environments. Preserved within "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II published by Smith Elder & Co. , London in 1913; it immortalizes an era-defining chapter in polar exploration while honoring those who dared venture into uncharted territories for science and discovery rather than commercial gain.
