EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Dr. C. V. Stanford, a prominent figure in the world of music during the late 19th century. The image, captured around 1880 and printed in 1895 by F Jenkins Heliog, portrays a distinguished man with an air of intellect and authority. Dr. Charles Villiers Stanford was not only an accomplished Irish composer but also a respected music teacher and conductor. Even as a young undergraduate, he was appointed as the organist of Trinity College, Cambridge, which set the stage for his illustrious career. At the age of 29, Stanford became one of the founding professors at the Royal College of Music where he dedicated himself to teaching composition until his passing in 1924. His influence extended beyond England's borders as he held professorships abroad as well. The photograph captures Dr. Stanford's sharp features - his oval-shaped face adorned with spectacles and complemented by a neatly trimmed mustache - all exuding confidence and knowledge. This monochrome portrait serves as both a historical record and homage to this exceptional musician who shaped generations through his teachings and compositions. Preserved within these black-and-white tones is not just an image but also a testament to Dr. C. V. Stanford's immense contribution to music education worldwide.
