EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of London in 1906. The iconic Westminster Bridge serves as the backdrop, with its majestic arches leading our gaze towards the famous Big Ben on the left. Standing out amidst this historic scenery are the double-decker electric trams that dominate the foreground. The image offers a glimpse into daily life during this era, showcasing an array of shop fronts along Westminster Bridge Road. Among them, we can spot R Lumley and W Morris establishments, which were likely popular destinations for locals and visitors alike. It's fascinating to imagine what goods and services these shops offered over a century ago. Notably, some of the buildings lining the right side of the bridge have since been demolished to make way for County Hall – once headquarters of Greater London Council but now transformed into a hotel. This photograph captures a moment frozen in time before such changes occurred. As we observe this snapshot from history, it becomes evident how much transportation has evolved over time. The presence of electric trams highlights advancements made in road transport during this period. Preserved by Guildhall Library and Art Gallery, this monochrome image allows us to appreciate both architectural beauty and everyday life from early 20th-century London without commercial use intentions.
