Doncaster North Bus Station, South Yorkshire, 1967. Artist: Michael Walters

Doncaster North Bus Station, 1967. Passengers run for their bus as a mid 1960s GUY and an early 1950s Daimler STL double decker bus get ready to depart. Doncaster has two bus stations, one North and one South, which serve different areas. This one is adjacent to the railway station. As with a great number of the bland, late 1960s concrete structures, the station and multi-storey car park had a limited life span and were totally redeveloped in 2007 to include an extension to the adjacent Frenchgate Shopping Centre, increased parking facilities and an updated bus terminus travel centre

EDITORS COMMENTS
Doncaster North Bus Station, South Yorkshire, 1967. Passengers rush to catch their buses amidst the bustling scene captured by artist Michael Walters. The photograph showcases a snapshot of Doncaster's vibrant transportation hub during the mid-1960s. In this image, two iconic double decker buses stand ready for departure - a GUY from the mid-1960s and an early 1950s Daimler STL. These vehicles symbolize an era when public transport played a vital role in connecting communities across Britain. Situated adjacent to the railway station, Doncaster North Bus Station served as a gateway for travelers arriving or departing by train. However, like many structures of its time, this concrete building had a limited lifespan and was eventually redeveloped in 2007. The redevelopment project aimed to modernize the bus terminus travel center while incorporating an extension to the neighboring Frenchgate Shopping Centre and increasing parking facilities. This transformation reflected society's evolving needs and aspirations over four decades. Michael Walters' monochrome composition not only captures the architectural essence of late 1960s Britain but also immortalizes the energy and movement that characterized daily life at Doncaster North Bus Station. It serves as a reminder of how public transport has been integral in shaping our cities and facilitating connections throughout history.
