Design for mural decoration, Italy, (1928). Creator: Unknown
Design for mural decoration, Italy, (1928). 2nd Quarter of 18th Century... Probably by a member of the family of stucco workers Bossi which was also considerably employed in Germany. The water-colour bears the inscription " Bossi inve : et deli." It is not clear whether this is an artists signature or a
note ascribing the picture to Bossi. As there is, however no doubt that the inscription was written in the 18th century it may be regarded as more or less trustworthy. After a water-colour. Plate CI, fig 195, from " An Encyclopaedia of Colour Decoration from the Earliest Times to the Middle of the XIXth Century" with explanatory text by Helmuth Bossert. [Ernst Wasmuth Ltd. Berlin, 1928]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning design for mural decoration, believed to have originated in Italy in 1928. Created by an unknown artist, possibly a member of the esteemed Bossi family of stucco workers who were also active in Germany during the 18th century, this piece exudes the grandeur and opulence of the Baroque era. The watercolor bears an inscription that reads "Bossi inve: et deli" which could either be an artist's signature or a note attributing the artwork to Bossi. While its exact meaning remains uncertain, its presence suggests that this inscription was written in the 18th century, lending some credibility to its association with Bossi. Featured as Plate CI, fig 195 from "An Encyclopaedia of Colour Decoration from the Earliest Times to the Middle of the XIXth Century" with explanatory text by Helmuth Bossert, this image offers a glimpse into historical color schemes and decorative styles prevalent during that period. The intricate patterned garlands adorned with vibrant flowers evoke a sense of natural beauty and harmony within interior spaces. The ornate plasterwork and meticulous attention to detail further exemplify Italian craftsmanship. With its fusion of chinoiserie elements and traditional European motifs, this design represents a harmonious blend between different cultural influences. This photograph not only serves as a visual delight but also provides valuable insights into art history and interior design practices from both past centuries and more recent times.
