Design for an aerial steam carriage, 1843 (1956)
Design for an aerial steam carriage, 1843 (1956). William Henson, a follower of English aviation pioneer Sir George Cayley, patented his proposed Aerial Steam Carriage in 1842. The machine would never have been able to fly as the wings would not have been strong enough to carry the weight of the steam engine needed to power it. The design did however establish several of the features used in modern aeroplanes, including monoplane wings, the fuselage, and tail-unit. A print from Things, a volume about the origin and early history of many things, common and less common, essential and inessential, by Readers Union, the Grosvenor Press, London, 1956

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Design for an aerial steam carriage, created by William Henson in 1843. A follower of renowned English aviation pioneer Sir George Cayley, Henson's visionary invention was patented in 1842. Although this magnificent machine would never have taken flight due to the wings' inability to support the weight of the necessary steam engine, it laid the foundation for several features found in modern airplanes. The monoplane wings, fuselage, and tail-unit depicted in this design are strikingly similar to those utilized by contemporary aircraft. This concept not only demonstrates Henson's innovative thinking but also highlights his significant contribution to aviation technology during the Victorian era. In this vibrant color print from Things, a comprehensive volume on various origins and histories compiled by Readers Union and published by The Grosvenor Press in London (1956), we witness people captivated by this unusual creation. Their awe-struck expressions reflect their fascination with science and invention as they watch intently, envisioning a future where humans conquer the skies. Transportation has always been at the forefront of human progress, and this image serves as a testament to our relentless pursuit of innovation throughout history. While commercial use is not mentioned here, it is undeniable that designs like Henson's paved the way for advancements that revolutionized air travel worldwide. As we admire this photograph today, let us appreciate how far we have come while acknowledging those who dared to dream beyond what seemed possible centuries ago.
