The Derby Day(?) - Another False Start. 1858

The Derby Day(?) - Another False Start, 1858. This cartoon shows Palmerston in the background, dismounted from his horse, Despatch, having been despatched from the premiership. In the foreground, Lord Derby, makes an eager start to his second term in office. The question mark in parentheses in the title refers to Derbys first government in 1852 generally called the Who? Who? Ministry. This was because in 1852 many of the new Cabinet were given high office for the first time. The very deaf Duke of Wellington would ask Who? after every new introduction. This 1858 minority government would last just one year. To the right, we see the shadowy figure of Disraeli, who had maybe thought he might have been in line to lead the Conservatives if Palmerstons government had not fallen so suddenly and unexpectedly. From Punch, or the London Charivari, May 22, 1858

The Derby Day (?) - Another False Start, 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the political landscape of 19th century Britain. In this satirical cartoon, we see Lord Palmerston dismounted from his horse, symbolizing his removal from the premiership. Meanwhile, Lord Derby eagerly begins his second term in office, represented by his enthusiastic start on the racetrack. The title's question mark refers to Derby's first government in 1852, known as the "Who? Who? Ministry". This nickname originated from the Duke of Wellington's habit of asking "Who?" after every new introduction due to his hearing impairment. The uncertainty surrounding this previous government adds an intriguing layer to the image. To the right of the composition stands Disraeli, a shadowy figure who had perhaps anticipated leading the Conservatives if Palmerston's government hadn't unexpectedly fallen. His presence hints at underlying power struggles within British politics during this time. This print not only showcases elements of horse racing and sportsmanship but also serves as a caricatured commentary on political figures and their ambitions. It offers a glimpse into an era where politics intertwined with social events like The Derby Day. Created by Benjamin Disraeli and featuring prominent statesmen such as Edward Stanley (15th Earl of Derby) and Lord Palmerston, this heritage image provides valuable insight into historical dynamics while showcasing artistic skill through its intricate engraving technique.
