EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a significant moment in history - the death of David Livingstone, the renowned Scottish missionary and explorer. Taken on 1 May 1873, this image shows Livingstone kneeling in prayer by his bedside, as he was found dead by his native servants. Livingstone's legacy is deeply intertwined with exploration, religion, and discovery. As the first European to discover the majestic Victoria Falls on the Zambezi river in central Africa, he played a pivotal role in expanding our knowledge of the continent. However, his journey to find the source of the Nile led him to fall seriously ill and go missing for some time. Although he was eventually found by Henry Morton Stanley in 1871, Livingstone never fully recovered from his illness and sadly passed away in Bangwelulu, Zambia. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of his dedication to both his Christian faith and exploration. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of solemnity to this image while emphasizing its historical significance. It transports us back to the nineteenth century when explorers like Livingstone ventured into unknown territories with unwavering determination. As we reflect upon this photograph print captured by David Livingstone himself or someone closely associated with him (creator Unknown), we are reminded not only of one man's extraordinary life but also of how exploration can shape our understanding of different cultures and continents.
