Cutting the Cienfuegos Cables, (1898), 1920s
The Spanish used undersea cables as a means to communicate with not only the rest of Cuba, but also the Spanish command. These cables had many key junctions. From the shore near Cienfuegos, cables connected to Havana, the port of Santiago, and then branched off to other Caribbean islands such as Jamaica. The three cables were cut, at sea in several places, disrupting much of the communications between the Spanish and their operations in Cuba. For the mission, the cruiser Marblehead, the gunboat Nashville, and the revenue cutter Windom were dispatched under the command of Captain Bowman H. McCalla. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a significant moment in history - the cutting of the Cienfuegos Cables during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The image showcases a group of men standing on a ship's deck, their determined expressions revealing their intent to disrupt Spanish communications. These cables served as vital lifelines for the Spanish command, connecting Cuba with other key locations such as Havana, Santiago, and even Caribbean islands like Jamaica. Led by Captain Bowman H. McCalla, three American vessels - the cruiser Marblehead, gunboat Nashville, and revenue cutter Windom - were dispatched on this mission to sever these crucial undersea cables. With rifles aimed at strategic points along the cables' route at sea, they successfully disrupted communication between Spain and its operations in Cuba. This historic event marked a turning point in the war as it severely hindered Spanish military coordination and control over Cuban affairs. The print not only highlights this pivotal moment but also provides insight into early 20th-century warfare tactics employed by the United States. Preserved through time on a cigar card from "The History of Cuba" this image serves as a reminder of America's involvement in shaping global events during that era. It symbolizes both technological advancements with undersea cables and military strategies utilized during conflicts like the Spanish-American War. This photograph is an invaluable piece of historical documentation that sheds light on an important chapter in American history.
