Curtiss Model E Flying Boat (hull only), 1913. Creator: Curtiss Aeroplane

Hull of a Curtiss Model E Flying Boat. Full-size aircraft was a single-engine, two-seat, biplane with a pusher engine mounted above and behind the pilot between the wings; 90-horsepower Curtiss OX V8 engine. Dark green finish. In 1911, Glenn Curtiss was awarded the prestigious Collier Trophy for the development of the hydroaeroplane, a land airplane mounted on floats. In 1913, Curtiss developed the first practical and highly successful flying boat, the Model E, with the entire fuselage being a hull rather than mounting the aircraft on floats. The later Model F perfected the flying boat design with the incorporation of a V hull, supplanting the less efficient flat-bottomed hull of the Model E. Among the Curtiss Model E Flying Boats produced in 1913 was one sold to Logan A. " Jack" Vilas of Chicago. Vilas Model E was powered by a 90-horsepower Curtiss OX engine. With this aircraft, Vilas made the first crossing of Lake Michigan, flying from St. Joseph, Michigan, to Grant Park on Chicagos waterfront in July 1913. Vilas donated the hull of his Model E Flying Boat to the Smithsonian Institution in 1949. Nothing else of the aircraft survives

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Curtiss Model E Flying Boat, a groundbreaking aircraft that revolutionized aviation in 1913. Created by the renowned Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, this particular image captures the hull of the Model E Flying Boat, which was a remarkable feat of engineering for its time. The full-size aircraft boasted a single-engine, two-seat biplane design with a powerful 90-horsepower Curtiss OX V8 engine. Its dark green finish added to its sleek and elegant appearance. Notably, Glenn Curtiss, the visionary behind this innovation, received the prestigious Collier Trophy in 1911 for his pioneering work on hydroaeroplanes. Unlike previous designs that utilized floats to enable water takeoffs and landings, the Model E featured an entire fuselage that served as a hull. This breakthrough allowed for more efficient performance on both water and air. One notable owner of a Curtiss Model E Flying Boat was Logan A. "Jack". Vilas from Chicago. Equipped with a 90-horsepower engine variant known as the Curtiss OX engine, Vilas used his aircraft to achieve an incredible milestone - he made history by completing Lake Michigan's first crossing in July 1913. In recognition of its significance to aviation history, Vilas generously donated the hull of his beloved Model E Flying Boat to the esteemed Smithsonian Institution in 1949. While nothing else remains of this extraordinary aircraft today, this print serves as a testament to its enduring legacy and technological advancements achieved by Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company during this era.
