Cross section of the tube, &c. 1845. Creator: Unknown
Cross section of the tube, &c. 1845. Diagram showing the workings of an atmospheric railway, a system using air pressure for locomotion, invented by Clegg and Samuda. To the leading carriage of every train a piston is attached by a bent plate; on the piston-rod are four wheels, two before and two behind the bent plate, so that when the piston is in the pipe, these wheels raise the valve, and prevent it from touching the bent plate. In this manner a communication is made between the piston in the pipe and the leading carriage. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the innovative world of 19th-century transportation. The image showcases a cross section of an atmospheric railway, a revolutionary system that utilized air pressure for locomotion. Created by the minds of Clegg and Samuda, this concept aimed to redefine public transport during its time. The diagram reveals the intricate workings of this pioneering railway system. At the forefront of every train carriage, a piston is attached by a bent plate, ensuring a secure connection between the piston in the pipe and the leading carriage. To prevent any interference with the bent plate, four wheels are strategically placed on the piston-rod - two before and two behind it - effectively raising the valve when necessary. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" in 1845 offers us a glimpse into Victorian-era technology and innovation. It highlights how inventors like Joseph Daguilar Samuda and Samuel Clegg pushed boundaries to revolutionize transportation methods. As we admire this historical artifact captured by an unknown creator, we can't help but marvel at their ingenuity and foresight. This print serves as both a testament to human progress throughout history and an inspiration for future advancements in modern-day transportation systems.
