Crisp white linen, 1940
Crisp white linen, 1940. From Life as a Nurse, booklet on nursing during World War II, in Tucks Better Little Book series. At the beginning of the war it was estimated that up to 67, 000 nurses were needed to care for the expected air-raid casualties - more than the number of trained nurses in employment. A Civil Nursing Reserve was set up - 7000 trained nurses, 3000 assistant nurses and also nursing auxiliaries. The auxiliaries were given fifty hours training in hospital before they started work. 6, 200 from the Civil Nursing Reserve were working in hospitals in June 1940. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Crisp white linen, 1940" offers a glimpse into the world of nursing during World War II. In the midst of the war, the demand for nurses far exceeded the number of trained professionals available. To address this urgent need, a Civil Nursing Reserve was established, comprising 7,000 trained nurses along with 3,000 assistant nurses and nursing auxiliaries. In this image, we see a dedicated nurse dressed in her crisp white uniform made from fine linen fabric. Standing before a mirror in London during that tumultuous time, she represents the countless women who stepped up to serve on the home front. With determination etched on her face and an air of professionalism surrounding her, she embodies strength and compassion. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its portrayal of one individual but also in its representation of an entire profession's commitment to caring for those affected by war. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to the image while capturing both the seriousness and resilience required during such challenging times. As we reflect upon this historical moment captured by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. , it serves as a reminder of how women played an integral role in supporting their countries' war efforts. Their dedication as nurses helped alleviate suffering amidst chaos and uncertainty – truly embodying heroism through their chosen profession.
