Crevecoeur fowls and Japanese bantams...at the Crystal Palace, 1862. Creator: Harrison Weir
Crevecoeur fowls and Japanese bantams from the summer exhibition of poultry, pigeons, and rabbits at the Crystal Palace, 1862. The Crevecoeur Fowls are a large variety of fowl, not long introduced into this country: they are excellent for the table as well as for their laying properties. The Japanese bantams were the greatest novelties of the show; they are exceedingly curious, the legs being scarcely an inch in length; the general carriage of the birds is also peculiar; their colour is a light fawn'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, created by renowned English artist Harrison Weir in 1862, showcases two distinctive breeds of poultry - Crevecoeur fowls and Japanese bantams - on display at the Crystal Palace during the Summer Exhibition of Poultry, Pigeons, and Rabbits. The Crevecoeur Fowls, a relatively new addition to British farms, are depicted in their regal splendor, boasting impressive size and excellent qualities for both table fare and egg production. The true stars of the image, however, are the diminutive Japanese bantams. With their legs barely an inch in length and peculiar carriage, these exotic birds were the greatest novelties of the show. Their light fawn coloring adds to their allure, making them a fascinating contrast to the larger Crevecoeur Fowls. The Crystal Palace, a grand Victorian structure, serves as the perfect backdrop for this avian display. Weir masterfully captures the essence of the event, showcasing the birds in their finest form while highlighting the excitement and curiosity that surrounded these new additions to the world of poultry. This print, originally published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the world of 19th-century animal husbandry and the fascination with exotic breeds. Harrison Weir's skillful engraving brings the vibrant scene to life, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and diversity of these remarkable creatures.
