Cossacks Escorting the Taranchi into Russian Territory During the Occupation of the Ili...19th cent Creator: Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin

Painting of Cossacks Escorting the Taranchi into Russian Territory During the Occupation of the Ili Valley in 1881-1882, 19th century. One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. The album was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918, reigned 1895-1917), Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops, a title bestowed by Nicholas I), and presented to him in the summer of 1891 on his return to Saint Petersburg through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. The theme of the album is Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman (or ataman) Ermak Timofeevich (died 1585) over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with subjects from more than three centuries of Russian history

EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor painting, titled "Cossacks Escorting the Taranchi into Russian Territory During the Occupation of the Ili Valley in 1881-1882," is a masterpiece by the Russian artist Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin from the 19th century. The painting is one of 21 watercolors in an album chronicling the history of the Siberian Cossacks, which was presented as a gift to Tsar Nicholas II in 1891 during his journey back to Saint Petersburg from a trip to the Russian Far East. The scene depicted in the painting shows Cossack soldiers escorting Taranchi people, likely Central Asian nomads, into Russian territory during the Russian occupation of the Ili Valley in the late 19th century. The Cossacks, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, are depicted on horseback, leading Taranchi men, women, and children on foot. The Taranchi are shown wearing traditional clothing, with some carrying belongings on their backs. The painting is a testament to the rich cultural exchange that took place between the Russian Cossacks and the local Central Asian populations during the expansion of Russian territory east of the Ural Mountains. The album as a whole covers the history of the Cossacks from the victory of Ermak Timofeevich over Khan Kuchum in 1582 to the late 19th century, making it an invaluable historical record. Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin's skillful use of color and brushwork brings the scene to life, capturing the spirit of the Cossacks and the Taranchi as they navigate the complexities of cultural interaction and territorial expansion. This painting is not only a beautiful work of art but also an important historical document, shedding light on a fascinating chapter in Russian history.
