Copernican sun-centred (heliocentric) system of the universe, 1708
Copernican sun-centred (heliocentric) system of the universe, 1708. This shows the orbit of the Moon round the Earth, and the orbits of the Earth and planets round the Sun, including Jupiter and its moons, all surrounded by the 12 signs of the zodiac. The figure at bottom right is Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543). Prior to the work of Copernicus the Earth was considered to be the stationary centre of the universe, a notion first advocated by the Egyptian astronomer Ptolemy. From Harmonia Macrocsmica by Andreas Cellarius. (Amsterdam, 1708)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Copernican sun-centred (heliocentric) system of the universe, as depicted in 1708. The intricate illustration portrays the orbits of celestial bodies such as the Moon around Earth and planets revolving around the Sun, including Jupiter with its moons. Surrounding these cosmic paths are the twelve signs of the zodiac, adding a touch of astrological mystique to this scientific representation. At the bottom right corner stands Nicolaus Copernicus, a renowned Polish astronomer who revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos. Prior to his groundbreaking work, it was widely believed that Earth served as an immovable center of existence—a notion originally proposed by Egyptian astronomer Ptolemy. However, Copernicus's discoveries challenged this geocentric perspective and introduced humanity to a heliocentric model where our planet orbited around the Sun. The image is extracted from "Harmonia Macrocosmica" an astronomical masterpiece created by Andreas Cellarius in Amsterdam during 1708. This engraving not only captures significant advancements in science but also reflects society's growing fascination with astronomy and astrology during that era. With vibrant colors and meticulous details, this historical print transports us back to a time when humanity first glimpsed its place within a vast universe governed by precise laws. It serves as a testament to human curiosity and our unending quest for knowledge about our place in space-time.
