Cooker production line at the GEC factory, Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1960. Artist

Cooker production line at the GEC factory, Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1960. The final stages of cooker assembly at the GEC plant in Swinton (near Rotherham). The GEC, which was formed in 1900 first acquired a factory in Swinton during the Second World War, when it produced munitions. After the war, cooker production was based in Birmingham but the company struggled to find good workers, possibly due to the motor industry (which required similar skills) offering more money. The directors decided to open the factory in Swinton and the first cooker came off the production line in June of 1946

EDITORS COMMENTS
Cooker production line at the GEC factory, Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1960. This print captures a pivotal moment in the history of the General Electric Company (GEC) as it showcases the final stages of cooker assembly at their Swinton plant. Established during World War II for munitions production, GEC faced challenges in finding skilled workers after the war due to higher wages offered by the booming motor industry. In response, GEC's directors made a bold decision to open a factory in Swinton. The first cooker rolled off its production line in June 1946. The image depicts an industrious scene with female workers diligently engaged in assembling cookers along an impressive assembly line. Their dedication and expertise are evident as they contribute to Britain's domestic appliance industry. This photograph not only highlights the importance of manufacturing and industrial progress but also pays tribute to these hardworking women who played a vital role in shaping post-war Britain. It serves as a testament to their skills and resilience amidst challenging times. Captured by renowned photographer Michael Walters from Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , this monochrome masterpiece transports us back to an era where manual labor was valued and craftsmanship thrived. As we admire this historical snapshot, we can't help but marvel at how far technology has advanced since then while appreciating those who paved the way.
