Convicts During a Geography Lesson, 1906-1911. Creator: Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman
Convicts During a Geography Lesson, 1906-1911. This photograph is from an album of 47 views of convicts and structures at the Akatuy Prison, one of the main centers where political prisoners were held in the Russian Empire during the late-tsarist period. The album belonged to Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, a physician and member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, who was incarcerated at Akatuy from 1906 to 1911. The prison was located at the Akatuy silver mine in Nerchinsk okrug (district) in the Transbaikal Territory of Siberia. Thousands of political prisoners were exiled to Siberia from European Russia and from Poland, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia (all then part of the Russian Empire) following the repression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Criminal labor convicts and political prisoners had long been sent to Nerchinsk to work in extracting lead-silver ores in the region's mines. Irkutsk State University

Convicts During a Geography Lesson,
EDITORS COMMENTS
captured by Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman in the years 1906-1911, provides a rare and poignant glimpse into the daily life of political prisoners at Akatuy Prison in Nerchinsk okrug, Transbaikal Territory, Russia. This photograph is one of 47 views from an album compiled by Shinkman, a physician and member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, during his own imprisonment at the facility from 1906 to 1911. Akatuy Prison, situated at the Akatuy silver mine, was a significant center for holding political prisoners within the Russian Empire during the late-tsarist period. Thousands of individuals were exiled to Siberia from European Russia and territories including Poland, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia following the suppression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Criminal labor convicts and political prisoners had long been sent to Nerchinsk to work in extracting lead-silver ores in the region's mines. In this image, a group of convicts are seen intently focused on a geography lesson, their faces reflecting a range of emotions from curiosity to skepticism. The teacher, standing at the front of the room, holds a map and points to a specific location, while a convict in the back row looks on with a furrowed brow. The classroom setting, with its rough wooden benches and bare walls, serves as a stark reminder of the harsh conditions endured by these political prisoners. Shinkman's album offers a unique and valuable record of life within Akatuy Prison, providing insight into the experiences of those exiled and incarcerated during a tumultuous period in Russian history. This photograph, in particular, underscores the resilience and determination of these individuals, despite their challenging circumstances.
