The Comet of 1811, 1811. Creator: Unknown
The Comet of 1811, 1811. The Prince Regent's head, set in a star which is the head of the comet. In the comet's tail: Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings and Earl of Moira; Sheridan is in the second place, between and in front of Erskine and a partly concealed profile perhaps intended for Ponsonby. Next are the Duke of Norfolk and Lord Derby. Behind them are (?) Tierney and a military officer. Next come three Grenvilles abreast: Lord Temple between Lord Grenville (on his right) and the spectacled Buckingham. Behind them are Whitbread, holding up a frothing tankard of his Entire, and Lansdowne. Behind these are Grey, and (partly obscured) Lord Carlisle

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing hand-colored etching on paper, titled "The Comet of 1811," is an extraordinary work of British satire from the 19th century. The image depicts a comet with the head of King George IV of the United Kingdom, represented as the comet's tail. The comet's body is adorned with the head of the Prince Regent, later King George IV. Surrounding the comet are prominent figures of the time, each represented as stars or other celestial bodies. Among them are Francis Rawdon-Hastings, 1st Marquess of Hastings and Earl of Moira; Richard Brinsley Sheridan; Thomas Erskine, 2nd Earl of Kellie; the Duke of Norfolk; Lord Derby; Charles James Fox Tierney; a military officer; three Grenvilles (Lord Temple, Lord Grenville, and the spectacled Buckingham); William Whitbread, holding a frothing tankard of his 'Entire'; and Lansdowne. The satirical nature of this work is evident in the caricatured depictions of these individuals, each with distinct and humorous features. The political undertones are further emphasized by the use of celestial bodies to represent the figures, suggesting the volatile and unpredictable nature of British politics during this period. This work of art, with its rich history and intricate details, is a unique glimpse into the political and social climate of 19th-century Britain. It is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of art, satire, or British history.
