Columns of the great temple of Sethos I, Abydos, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood
Columns of the great temple of Sethos I, Abydos, Egypt, 1905. This temple within which we are standing was built in the fourteenth century BC and contained shrines to Osiris and the other great gods of Egypt besides one for the deified Sethos himself. This immediate neighbourhood had even then been for many centuries one of the most sacred places in the whole land because of a tradition that the god Osiris himself had been buried here. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the magnificent Columns of the great temple of Sethos I in Abydos, Egypt. Standing tall and proud, these ancient pillars evoke a sense of awe and admiration for the rich history and sacredness they hold within their stone walls. Built in the fourteenth century BC, this temple was not only dedicated to Osiris but also housed shrines for other prominent gods of Egypt. It is believed that even before its construction, this location held immense significance as it was said to be the burial place of the god Osiris himself. The image captures a moment frozen in time, with people sitting nearby, seemingly captivated by the grandeur before them. The stereoscopic photography technique used adds depth and dimension to this monochrome masterpiece. As we gaze upon this print, we can't help but feel transported to an era long gone yet still alive through these ancient ruins. The intricate details on each column tell stories of a civilization that worshipped deities like Osiris with utmost devotion. This photograph is part of a series called "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" curated by James H Breasted. It serves as a testament to both his passion for Egyptian history and Underwood & Underwood's talent for capturing moments that transcend time itself.
