Colonnade, Philae Temple, Egypt, c1890. Artist: Newton & Co

Colonnade, Philae Temple, Egypt, c1890. The construction of the temple dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis on the island of Philae started during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the 3rd century BC and was completed by his successor Ptolemy III Euergetes. It was the last remaining outpost of the Ancient Egyptian religion when the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian closed it down in c550. After damage caused by flooding after the construction of the Aswan Dam, the temple complex was moved, piece by piece, to another, nearby island in 1977-1980. Lantern slide. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the majestic Colonnade of Philae Temple in Egypt, dating back to around 1890. The temple, dedicated to the revered Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis, was initially constructed during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the 3rd century BC and completed by his successor Ptolemy III Euergetes. Serving as a significant religious center, it remained one of the last bastions of Ancient Egyptian worship until its closure by Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian around 550 AD. Over time, this architectural marvel faced damage due to flooding caused by the Aswan Dam's construction. However, an extraordinary effort took place between 1977 and 1980 when the entire temple complex was meticulously relocated piece by piece to a neighboring island. The image showcases a stunning colonnade adorned with intricately carved pillars that stand as testaments to ancient craftsmanship. It offers a glimpse into an era long gone but preserved through archaeological endeavors. Through this monochrome lens, we witness not only a remarkable architectural feature but also gain insight into Egypt's rich history and cultural heritage. This photograph serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve these ancient sites for future generations to appreciate their significance in unraveling humanity's past.
