The Cliff House, 1872. Creator: John J. Harley
The " Cliff House", 1872. Hotel on the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco, California, USA. The first Cliff House was built in 1858. This is emphatically the most picturesque part of San Francisco, both in its surroundings and in its seal-cliffs, where the sea-lions bark and whine and roar, with none to make them afraid. The distance from the city is about five miles...the Cliff House is built, as its name imports, upon frowning basalt; and the road that winds from it to the ocean hence has been cut through solid rock. The bluff of the hotel is about one hundred and thirty feet in perpendicular height...Detached bowlders lie at its base, and are tormented by the fierce rollers. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Cliff House in all its glory, as it stood proudly on the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco, California in 1872. Created by John J. Harley, this image showcases the first iteration of the Cliff House, which was originally built in 1858. Known for its breathtaking surroundings and iconic seal-cliffs where sea-lions playfully barked and roared undisturbed, this location truly represented the picturesque essence of San Francisco. Situated about five miles away from the city center, the Cliff House was perched upon imposing basalt cliffs that rose up to a staggering height of one hundred and thirty feet. The rugged beauty of this natural landscape is further accentuated by detached bowlders scattered at its base, constantly being battered by powerful ocean waves. To reach this magnificent destination from inland required traversing a road carved through solid rock. This remarkable photograph is an excerpt from "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton and Company in New York during 1872. It serves as a testament to both Harley's artistic talent behind the lens and his ability to capture not only stunning landscapes but also moments frozen in time. As we gaze upon this historic image today, we are transported back to an era when nature's grandeur met human ingenuity at one of San Francisco's most beloved landmarks - The Cliff House.
