EDITORS COMMENTS
Classroom During a Lesson," an evocative photograph taken by N Terekhov in 1889, offers a captivating glimpse into the past of the Aleksandrovsky School in the Siberian city of Tyumen (then Tiumen). Established in 1879, this educational institution catered to young boys from the first to the sixth grades, making it an essential pillar of the community during the 1880s. The school's inception was driven by the visionary governor-general of Siberia, Nikolai Gennadievich Kaznakov, who recognized the importance of quality education in shaping the future of the region. Through a unique project orchestrated by American journalist and explorer George Kennan, the school received valuable equipment from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This photograph captures a moment in time as students diligently engage in their lessons. Their attire, a mix of traditional Russian garments and Western-style clothing, reflects the blending of cultures that was characteristic of late 19th-century Russia. The boys, seated at their desks, focus intently on their studies, while their teachers look on, ensuring their pupils remain on task. The interior of the classroom is adorned with simple yet functional furniture, and the blackboard at the front of the room bears the remnants of a lesson long past. The atmosphere is one of focused learning, a testament to the dedication of the teachers and the eagerness of their students. This photograph, taken from the extensive collection at the Library of Congress, offers a fascinating window into the past, inviting us to explore the rich history of education in Siberia during the late 19th century.
