The Circassian envoys to England, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The Circassian envoys to England, 1862. Engraving from photographs by Mayall, The elder of them is named Constan Okhoo Ismael [right]...He has...resisted successfully the overwhelming forces which the Russians brought against him...When he mounts his horse 20, 000 mounted warriors attend upon his orders. He is now forty-one years of age, which is considered an advanced age in that country, as they are generally killed before they attain to it. Since he was fifteen years old he has maintained an incessant warfare, and is covered with the scars of wounds (sixteen in number). Yet never has this brave man listened to the fair promises or been seduced by the gifts of the Muscovites. Twice have the most alluring offers been made to him by the Czar Nicholas, and once by Alexander, a few months ago; yet in every instance he returned a haughty refusal...The other deputy, Hadji Hassan Effendi [left]...has served, from extreme youth, as mediator between the Circassians and the Turks...In spite of his youth the Circassians have employed him in the most important political services, and the National Council fixed upon him as the most fitting companion to Constan Okhoo Ismael'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the moment when Constan Okhoo Ismael and Hadji Hassan Effendi, two esteemed Circassian envoys, arrived in England in 1862. The photograph, an engraving from Mayall's studio, showcases the two men in traditional Circassian attire, with Constan Okhoo Ismael on the right and Hadji Hassan Effendi on the left. Constan Okhoo Ismael, the elder of the two, is depicted as a formidable figure, with a stern expression and a scarred face, a testament to the countless battles he had fought against the Russians since the age of fifteen. Despite the relentless Russian forces, he had managed to resist their advances and maintain his people's independence. His age, forty-one, was considered advanced in Circassian culture, as many were often killed before reaching it. Hadji Hassan Effendi, the younger deputy, is shown to the left, with a more youthful appearance. However, his experience and wisdom were beyond his years. He had served as a mediator between the Circassians and the Turks since his youth and had been entrusted with important political services. The National Council had selected him as the most suitable companion to Constan Okhoo Ismael for their diplomatic mission to England. The Circassians, a Caucasian people, had been under constant threat from the expanding Russian Empire, leading to a long-standing resistance movement. The arrival of these envoys in England was a significant event, as they sought international support for their cause. The Illustrated London News reported on their visit, highlighting their bravery, leadership, and unwavering commitment to their homeland. This photograph is a poignant reminder of their resilience and the complex geopolitical dynamics of the time.
