Church of St. Mary, in course of construction at Hornsey-Rise, 1860. Creator: Unknown
Church of St. Mary, in course of construction at Hornsey-Rise, 1860. St. Mary's Church will be in the Decorated style of the fourteenth century. The arrangement of the plan is that of a nave, with north and south aisles, north and south transepts, and chancel...It will be substantially built, the exterior being of Kentish ragstone, with Bath stone dressings, and will accommodate on the ground floor 750 persons. It is not intended to erect galleries at present, but provision has been made in the arrangement of the plan for their erection if required hereafter. They will occupy the west end and the transepts only, leaving the nave and the side aisles throughout free and unincumbered. The further accommodation then obtained will be for 270 more. The church is being erected from the design and under the direction of Mr. A. D. Gough, of Lancaster-place, Strand; the contractor for the works being Mr. G. J. Carter, of Hornsey-road'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Church of St. Mary in the midst of its construction at Hornsey-Rise in 1860. The church, designed in the Decorated style of the fourteenth century, boasts a grand architectural plan featuring a nave, north and south aisles, north and south transepts, and a chancel. The exterior of the church is made primarily of Kentish ragstone, with Bath stone dressings, giving it an elegant and sturdy appearance. The church is intended to accommodate 750 persons on the ground floor, with the possibility of adding galleries in the west end and the transepts to accommodate an additional 270 people, should the need arise. The church is being erected under the direction of Mr. A. D. Gough of Lancaster-place, Strand, with Mr. G. J. Carter of Hornsey-road serving as the contractor for the works. Despite the incompleteness of the structure, the attention to detail is evident in the intricate design and the careful arrangement of the stones. The Church of St. Mary at Hornsey-Rise was a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of its builders, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past as the church took shape.
