Chukchi Women Elders, 1889. Creator: Unknown

Chukchi Women Elders, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The album contains photographs of the local Chukchi people and views of the harbor Petropavlovsk, the village of Nikol'skoe on Bering Island, and Novo-Mariinskii, where construction of the first building is shown. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, dating back to the late 1880s or early 1890s, depicts a group of Chukchi women elders. The image is part of an album documenting the Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and the construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The album, which also contains individual photographs, is believed to have once belonged to Emperor Nicholas II, based on its unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number. The Chukchi women, dressed in traditional clothing, gaze directly at the camera with an air of quiet dignity. Their attire consists of colorful coats and dresses, layered to protect them from the harsh Arctic climate. The women's clothing, a testament to their rich cultural heritage, is a striking contrast to the modern European garb worn by the Russian settlers and sailors in other photographs in the album. The meeting of frontiers between the indigenous Chukchi people and the Russian settlers is a significant historical moment captured in this photograph. The image offers a glimpse into the lives of the Chukchi women, their resilience, and their connection to their land during a time of great change. This photograph is a valuable historical artifact, preserving the legacy of the Chukchi people and the Russian frontier in Siberia during the nineteenth century.
