Chukchi Women and Children, 1889. Creator: Unknown
Chukchi Women and Children, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The album contains photographs of the local Chukchi people and views of the harbor Petropavlovsk, the village of Nikol'skoe on Bering Island, and Novo-Mariinskii, where construction of the first building is shown. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Chukchi Women and Children, 1889," offers a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous people of the Chukchi region in northeastern Russia during the late 19th century. The image, part of an album documenting the Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and the construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea, is believed to have been part of the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The photograph captures a group of Chukchi women and children, dressed in traditional clothing, standing in a line with direct gazes and a hint of suspicion or distrust towards the camera. The women wear long, fur-trimmed coats and tunics, while the children are dressed in similar garments, some with fur hats and boots. The boys, dressed in fur-trimmed pants and shirts, are seen with a sense of curiosity and wonder. The photograph provides a window into the meeting of frontiers between the Russian settlers and the indigenous Chukchi people. The image showcases the rich tribal culture and the unique clothing that was an integral part of their heritage. The photograph, with its historic significance and beautiful composition, is a testament to the past and serves as a reminder of the diverse and fascinating history of Russia's Siberian frontier.
