"Children of the Coast", by E. J. Cobbett, in the Exhibition of the Society of British Artists, 1862. Engraving of a painting. It is the prerogative of painting, even more than of poetry, to interest with the simplest materials and the humblest of our fellow-creatures. A written idyll could scarcely convey to us the sweet ingenuousness, the interested attention, and the confiding affection in the blue upturned eyes of the boy in this picture. It could not either, without the risk of lengthy triviality of particulars, place before us this little girl in all her quaint, unkempt rusticity, and show us the pretty air of superiority she assumes in virtue of her slight advantage of age over her little brother or companion...How often have most of us in childhood sat as idly by the seashore...? From "Illustrated London News", 1862

Children of the Coast
EDITORS COMMENTS
by E.J. Cobbett, exhibited at the Society of British Artists in 1862, is a captivating painting that invites the viewer to connect with the simple joys of childhood. This engraving, created by E. Skill, beautifully preserves the original artwork for future generations to appreciate. The painting depicts two children, a boy and a girl, engrossed in their own world by the seashore. The blue eyes of the boy, filled with sweet innocence and curiosity, gaze upwards, while the girl, with a quaint and unkempt appearance, assumes an air of superiority towards her younger companion. The Illustrated London News, in its review of the exhibition, eloquently described the painting as having the power to interest even with the "simplest materials and the humblest of our fellow-creatures." It went on to note that a written idyll could not convey the same level of detail and emotion as the painting, particularly in regards to the children's expressions and body language. The scene is one that many of us can relate to, having spent hours as children sitting idly by the seashore, lost in our own thoughts and imaginations. The painting transports us back to those carefree days, reminding us of the joy and wonder that can be found in the simplest of experiences. Overall, "Children of the Coast" is a beautiful and evocative work of art that invites us to reflect on the innocence and simplicity of childhood, and the power of painting to capture and preserve such moments in time.
