EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed figure of Charles Howard, First Earl of Nottingham, a prominent English statesman and admiral from the early to mid-19th century. Painted by H Robinson, this portrait showcases the distinguished features of Lord Howard, who was not only a cousin to Queen Elizabeth I but also held significant positions in England's naval forces. As Lord High Admiral appointed in 1585, Howard played a crucial role in leading the English fleet against the mighty Spanish Armada. His strategic command and bravery were further demonstrated during the Anglo-Dutch expedition to Cadiz in 1596. In recognition of his exceptional service, he was granted an earldom as Earl of Nottingham in 1597. Even after Elizabeth I's reign ended, Charles Howard continued his loyal service under James I as Lord High Admiral until 1619. This print is derived from an original painting that belongs to The Right Honourable The Earl of Verulam's collection. The image portrays a bearded man dressed elegantly in period clothing with a distinctive ruff collar and hat. It offers us a glimpse into both the political power and aristocratic splendor associated with figures like Charles Howard during this era. With its monochrome aesthetic capturing every detail meticulously engraved by H Robinson, this print serves as an enduring testament to one of Britain's most influential politicians and military leaders from centuries past.
