Charles the Great - A Glimpse into the Reign of a Powerful Monarch
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases Charles the Great, also known as Charlemagne, one of history's most influential figures. Captured in the 1930s by an unknown creator, this portrait is based on a reliquary bust dating back to the 14th century. Charlemagne's legacy spans across centuries and nations. As King of the Franks from 768, he expanded his kingdom to become Emperor of the Romans in 800. His reign was marked by military conquests, political alliances, and religious reforms that shaped medieval Europe. The reliquary bust depicted here is believed to contain Charlemagne's skullcap and resides within Aachen Cathedral Treasury alongside his remains. This sacred location holds great significance for those who seek to understand this remarkable ruler. In this image, we witness a glimpse of Charles' regal presence - a man whose power resonated throughout his realm. With an air of authority and wisdom etched upon his face, he stands as a symbol of strength amidst turbulent times. Elizabeth O'Neill beautifully captures Charlemagne's story in her book "The World's Story" providing young readers with insight into this historical figure who left an indelible mark on European history. As we explore this photograph today, we are reminded not only of Charles' greatness but also how art can transport us through time - connecting us with past civilizations and their extraordinary leaders like never before.
