Chancel of the Trinity Church, Haverstock Hill, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Chancel of the Trinity Church, Haverstock Hill, [London], 1850. This Church, situated in the parish of St. Pancras, was consecrated on Tuesday last by the Lord Bishop of London, in the presence of a very large assemblage of people...The Church is of admirable character in design, and the interior is particularly effective. The open roof is stained to imitate oak, as are also the seats, the galleries, &c. These latter are set back from the pillars separating the nave from the aisles, and the general appearance of the nave is thus not interfered with. The chancel, as may be seen by our Illustration, is of charming and novel design, the numerous arches producing, to use an artistic phrase, a pleasing and elegant play of lines...Messrs. Wyatt and Brandon are the architects of this fine Church; and Messrs. T. and W. Piper, the builders'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the chancel of the Trinity Church, Haverstock Hill, in London, which was consecrated in 1850. The Church, located in the St. Pancras parish, was a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship, attracting a large crowd during its consecration by the Bishop of London. The interior of the Church was particularly noteworthy, with an open roof stained to resemble oak and seats and galleries also stained to match. The galleries were set back from the pillars, preserving the uninterrupted appearance of the nave. The chancel, as shown in the print, was a charming and novel design, featuring numerous arches that created a pleasing and elegant play of lines. Messrs. Wyatt and Brandon were the architects of this magnificent Neo-Gothic structure, while Messrs. T. and W. Piper served as the builders. The print, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and intricacy of this Victorian-era Church, with its high arches, intricate details, and congregation of women in attendance. The print, which is engraved and shows the interior of the Church in all its glory, is a testament to the Gothic Revival movement and the enduring appeal of traditional Christian architecture.
