EDITORS COMMENTS
This carte-de-visite portrait captures the essence of Sally Cadwallader Ely, a remarkable woman who made significant contributions during a transformative period in American history. Taken between 1862 and 1869 by Henry C. Phillips, this three-quarter length portrait showcases Sally's dignified presence and intellectual prowess. Seated with her body turned slightly to the left, Sally exudes confidence as she gazes directly at the camera. Her right arm rests on a table adorned with a floral cloth, while her left arm gracefully rests in her lap. Holding a book delicately with her thumb inside its pages, it is evident that education played an important role in Sally's life. Sally's appearance reflects the fashion of the time - she wears a dark-colored dress with full-length fitted sleeves and a high neck. Her hair is parted at the center and styled into ringlets on either side of her head. A touch of pink tint adds warmth to her cheeks, enhancing her natural beauty. The intricately carved back of the chair behind Sally hints at elegance and refinement. The faded bottom portion of the image represents popular artistic style during that era. Preserved within an album featuring a triple-lined gold border, this photograph serves as both an intimate glimpse into Sally Cadwallader Ely's life and as a testament to Henry C. Phillips' skillful artistry behind the lens.
