The Canterbury Settlement, New Zealand - sketch on board the "Randolph" Emigrant Ship, 1850. Colonists depart from the East India Dock on the Thames in London:..cabin passengers - purchasers of land, and their families, who have helped to form the plan of the colony, and are going out as leaders...they are distinguished from the mass of emigrating colonists...by high personal character...they are not driven from the mother-country...but are attracted to the colony by the prospects which its singular organization holds out...Later in the evening dancing took place on the upper deck of the Randolph, to the music of the band of the Coldstream Guards...[the passengers displayed] a manly and dignified cheerfulness suited to the occasion, and to the character of the English, now the only nation in the world capable of planning and accomplishing such enterprises'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This sketch, created on board the Randolph Emigrant Ship in 1850, depicts the Canterbury Settlement in New Zealand as it was envisioned by the intrepid colonists embarking on their journey from the East India Dock on the Thames in London. The passengers in this image are not the typical emigrants, but rather, the cabin passengers – those who had purchased land and were going out as leaders of the colony. They were distinguished from the masses by their high personal character and were not driven from their mother-country, but rather, attracted by the prospects of the colony's unique organization. The scene captures the excitement and anticipation of the journey ahead, with the passengers displaying a manly and dignified cheerfulness suited to the occasion. Later in the evening, dancing took place on the upper deck of the Randolph, to the music of the band of the Coldstream Guards. The passengers' spirits were high, reflecting the English resilience and determination that would come to define the Canterbury Settlement. This evocative sketch offers a glimpse into the hopes and dreams of these early settlers, as they set sail for a new life in a land far, far away.
