Cannon Revolver, exhibited in the Marine Museum, at Paris, 1854. Creator: Ebenezer Landells

Cannon Revolver, exhibited in the Marine Museum, at Paris, 1854....an instrument invented some time ago. M. Frugier Coigny claims to have invented it, in 1828...It is easy to see at once the numberless inconveniences of the revolving barrel...In the first place, the weapon becomes foul more quickly; and this defect, after a certain number of discharges, clogs and arrests all the movements of the machinery...there is the risk of explosion from several chambers going off together. These inconveniences are not removable by any improvement of the mechanical or instrumental details, but belong to the revolver-principle itself...the French Government has consigned it to the naval museum, among bygone objects of curiosity, the relics of infructuous invention...'. Cannon Revolver,

EDITORS COMMENTS
an intriguing invention exhibited in the Marine Museum in Paris during 1854, is depicted in this monochrome print by Ebenezer Landells. The cannon revolver, claimed to have been invented by M. Frugier Coigny in 1828, was a significant departure from traditional firearms of the time. However, its design brought about numerous inconveniences that limited its practical use. The revolving barrels, a distinctive feature of the cannon revolver, were prone to fouling more quickly than conventional weapons. After a certain number of discharges, the buildup of residue would impede the machinery's movements. Furthermore, there was a risk of explosion as multiple chambers could potentially discharge simultaneously. These issues were inherent to the revolver-principle itself and could not be remedied through mechanical or instrumental improvements. Despite its shortcomings, the French Government chose to preserve the cannon revolver in the naval museum as a curiosity from the past. The invention, which once held promise, was now relegated to the annals of infructuous inventions. This print, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854, captures the essence of this intriguing yet impractical contraption. The image features a man, likely M. Frugier Coigny, standing beside the cannon revolver, with a woman looking on in the background. The print offers a glimpse into the world of 19th-century armaments and the ongoing quest for innovation, even in the face of limitations.
