EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Brighton, from the Chain Pier, East Sussex, 1829" takes us back to a bygone era of coastal charm and engineering marvels. The artwork, created by Captain Samuel Brown, Nathaniel Whittock, and WJ Cooke in the 19th century, beautifully captures the essence of Brighton's iconic chain pier. The original chain pier at Brighton was an architectural masterpiece designed by Captain Samuel Brown. Opening its gates in November 1823, it stood as a testament to human ingenuity until its unfortunate demise on 29 November 1836 due to a fierce storm that caused destructive oscillation. Undeterred by nature's fury, it was rebuilt only to face another devastating storm on 4 December 1896. In this enchanting engraving brought to life with vibrant colors and intricate details, we witness a bustling scene along the seafront. A steamboat gracefully glides through the water while people leisurely stroll along the pier. The smoke emanating from the funnel adds an air of nostalgia and reminds us of an era when water transport played a significant role in connecting communities. As we gaze upon this historical gem captured within these frames, we are transported back in time to witness British seaside culture at its finest. This print serves as both a visual delight and a reminder of our rich heritage - showcasing not just Brighton's beauty but also paying homage to Captain Samuel Brown's remarkable contribution to civil engineering.
