Bridewell in 1666, (1897). Creator: Unknown

Bridewell in 1666, (1897). Bridewell Palace, on the banks of the Fleet River between Fleet Street and the River Thames, was built as the main London residence of King Henry VIII. Most of the palace was destroyed in the Great Fire of London, and rebuilt in 1666-1667. It was variously an orphanage, place of correction for wayward women, prison, school and a poorhouse. It was closed in 1855. From Old and New London, Volume I, by Walter Thornbury. [Cassell and Company, Limited, London, Paris & Melbourne, 1897]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Bridewell Palace in 1666, as depicted in a publication from 1897. The palace, originally built as King Henry VIII's main London residence, stood proudly on the banks of the Fleet River between Fleet Street and the River Thames. However, much of its grandeur was lost during the devastating Great Fire of London. Nevertheless, it was rebuilt with determination and resilience in 1666-1667. Over time, Bridewell Palace served various purposes that reflected its adaptability to societal needs. It functioned as an orphanage, a place for correcting wayward women, a prison, a school, and even a poorhouse before finally closing its doors in 1855. The image showcases not only the architectural beauty of this significant landmark but also provides insight into life during both the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. With sailboats gracefully gliding along the river Thames nearby, one can imagine how bustling this area must have been. Although created by an unknown artist or photographer whose identity remains shrouded in history's depths; their work has allowed us to glimpse into London's past through this monochrome snapshot. As we admire this piece today with awe and curiosity about our ancestors' lives within these walls; let us appreciate those who have preserved such historical treasures like Walter Thornbury's "Old and New London" publication from Cassell & Company Ltd. , ensuring that future generations can connect with their heritage.
