Semmes, a Confederate naval officer, commanded the notorious CSS Alabama, which wreaked havoc on Union vessels by capturing an astounding 69 prizes. However, his reign came to an end when the Alabama engaged in a fierce battle with the Union warship USS Kearsage off Cherbourg, France on June 19th, 1864.
